Sandra Berti

Sandra Berti was born in 1958 and grew up in Hertfordshire, she now resides in Kimpton village and works from her Studio Loft. Her love for colour, texture & shape is rooted in the ever changing compositions of the Greek Islands, countryside, home & garden.

"Home is a simple modern Greek Style, mainly white with splashes of colour which reflects in my work as is the love of the The Greek Islands and gardens, plus things I like along the way. Connecting elements of the exterior with the interior.

The feel and style of my work reflects how I like to live, just the simple minimal life with peace and joy, just enjoy the simple things in life. Embracing the land with which we live and admiring this natural beauty.

Often working on several paintings at one time, things occur from either the subconscious or a direct response. A sense of curation is continually present within my practice, each painterly mark I create is from a particular place and things I love along the way. Wood, especially old wood is my preferred choice, alternatively canvas. Seasonal palettes are applied boldly with an element of process and control, then unearthed with mark making.

Drawn to the distressed and unfinished, focusing on blocky form and the space between. The odd remnant of collage from either made papers or a pastry wrapper bought back from Greece, plus relevant words can also be added, as can an element of foraged land or found object. Always looking for that abstract minimal connection with blotches & tokens. Expecting nothing grand, just a simple naive composition of flattened shapes often over laying distressed backgrounds, where the viewer can have their own interpretation"

Sandra graduated with a BA|(Hons) in 2-Dimensional Design in 1997 from The University of Hatfield and spent most of her working career as a PA in a Pharmaceutical Company, before taking the leap to work as full time artist in 2023.

Inspired by Artists Jean-Michel Basquiat for his graffiti style, Patrick Heron for his bold use of colour, Howard Hodgkin for his contemporary colour & space and Barbara Hepworth for her minimalist sculptures.
